...which is a more stringent guideline than the FDAs. In order to receive a child toy safety rating the product has to be very safe if used by children. In other words if, in normal use by a child, the product was abused (put on too thick, accidentally eaten, accidentally dripped in the eye, ear or nose) would harm be done to the child? They have passed that test. The only warning associated with their products is that they should not be used by children under the age of three because the small paint disks, if swallowed, could provide a choking hazard. The product on the child under the age of three is fine. That said, the industry standard, to which we adhere, is to not paint on the face of a child under 3.
Parents must inquire into the sort of paints being used. You can go to Wal-Mart and buy paints labeled 'face paint'. And they're labeled 'face paint' because they're FDA approved to be...you can eat them and it won't hurt you. The difference is it's not actually made for the skin. It's not cosmetic grade which means it still can cause allergic reactions to the skin. The most common one being contact dermatitis. these health conditions are no joke and parents must "face" the facts. And not just the paint. It's also glitter. Little girls love to have lots of sparkly glitter and regular craft glitter is made out of metal cut into squares. If that gets into a child's eye it can cause permanent damage. I use only non-toxic, FDA approved, professional quality paints, glitters and adhesives. You will NEVER see me use anything not meant for application on the skin. I have not had an experience of severe reaction by myself or any client.
In some cases, darker colors can leave a slight stain which can be removed by using mild soap (baby shampoo is great!) and water.
